Mr & Mrs Thos Shakespeare of Main Road, Morton , have been informed that their son, Private William Shakespeare of the Coldstream Guards has been wounded and removed to hospital.

Another Morton man to be seriously wounded is Sargt William Shakespeare of the Coldstream Guards who has arrived in “Blighty” from France and is now at a Huddersfield hospital, suffering from injuries to right leg, right arm, shoulder, and left wrist married, his wife and three children reside at Hawthorne Villas, Station Road, Morton, where his parents, Mr & Mrs Thos Shakespeare also live. This makes the second time he has been wounded , and writing home he says on this occasion, he lay out on the battlefield for over six hours before the stretcher -bearers could get at him, so severe was the enemy shelling. He lost much blood, and as a consequence was very weak indeed. Formerly a miner at the Morton Colliery he served as a Volunteer in the Cyclists Corps of the Notts & Derby Regiment for over nine years. Enlisting on March 13th , 1915, he proceeded to France in the following September. His brother Edward, is a Sergt – Instructor at the Guards’ depot in Caterham , Surrey.
